Taan’s Moons

November 23rd 2014 was the day we held a Haida Gwaii launch of our second book project Taan’s Moons.
Alison, one of School District 50’s Early Learning Coordinators, was inspired by the traditional Haida descriptions of the moon. Through the eyes of Taan, the black bear of Haida Gwaii, she wrote the poem based on one version of the Haida moon cycle to honour the Haida tradition. Alison then invited Kiki van der Heiden, a visual and fibre artist, to work on the creative aspect of the poem.
This project is a prime example of exemplary island community partnerships. Through financial support from Literacy Haida Gwaii, School District 50 an BC’s Artstarts in Schools, 70 students from kindergarten to grade two worked hands-on with Kiki and Alison to sculpt the illustrations featured in Taan’s Moons; the project team also worked closely with the Elders to translate the book into both Skidegate and Old Massett Haida.
Award winning, best-selling Dogrib author Richard van Camp graciously wrote the Foreword. We are grateful to our publishers Tonya Martin and Meghan Hague of McKellar & Martin Publishing Group Ltd for believing in this book.
